My Father's Genealogy

My Paternal Side and Heer Family Genealogy or at Least Some of It...

My father's father was a "Heer" and his family goes back as far as I know so far to Germany in the 1690s. My great great great grandfather Christian Heer, was born in 1796 in Eppingen, Germany, in 1842 he brought his 2nd wife Christine Horsch Heer and all of his children except for one daughter, to the United States. He settled at Galena, Jo Daviess County, IL. His children were; 1st marriage (to his 1st cousin, Magdalena Neuschwanger), Elizabeth, Christian Jr, Henry, and Peter; 2nd marriage; David, Daniel, and Christiana (who also married her first cousin, who was also her father's nephew by marriage). My grandfather Raymond Nicholas Heer was the son of Walter Heer, who was the second son of David and his wife Martha Evans Heer, in all they had 17 children. This makes for a great story or at the very least any interesting plot for a soap opera to put in mildly.

My father's mother was a "White", and her family goes back so far to her grandfather William White. William White was born in about 1818 in Ireland (don't know where yet), and he married Bridget Flanagan probably after both had immigrated to New York, then had seven children that we know of, they are; Bridget Elizabeth in 1844, William James in 1847, Sarah in 1850, Mary J. in 1856, Norah in 1858, John Edward in 1860(he's my great grandfather) and lastly Patrick in 1863. All the children up to Mary were born in New York while the rest were born in Illinois, most likely in Bloomington, IL. William Sr., died in 1880 and Bridget raised her children alone after that. My great grandfather John Edward White, married on 29 April 1890, Mary Margaret Agnes Gallagher, who was born in 1860. They went on to have five children; Gertrude in 1891, Catherine Grace in 1894(she was my grandmother), Justina in 1896, Medard J. in 1899 and DeChantle in 1903. Catherine Grace, better known to us as just "Grace" married my grandfather Raymond Nicholas Heer ( I mentioned above), in 1927 in Chicago, IL. My father was the only child they had; we have been told stories that grandma Grace had many miscarriages and somewhere inbetween them she had dad. My father was born 27 Feb 1931 and sadly he died on 1 May 1993 of sepsis, but this was really due to the fact that he was diagnosed to late with Kidney Cancer to have had any treatment.

My father's name was Raymond Medard Heer, everyone called him Ray, he was born on 27 Feb 1931 and died on 1 May 1993. His parents were Raymond Nicholas Heer and Katherine Grace White. His parents were Richard Walter Heer who was known as Walter, and his mother was Anna Schmeltzer. His mother's parents were John White and Mary Margaret Agnes Gallagher.

Raymond and Grace were married on 1 Jan 1928 at Saint Thomas of Canterbury Church, Chicago, Illinois. Raymond was married once before to Florence Maycroft in 1921.

My Heer family is descended from John Christian Heer, who was born in Bietigheim, Baden, Germany in 1796. John served in the German army in 1815 against the forces of Napoleon. He was married twice, and had a total of seven children.
My Great Great Great Grandparents, (John) Christian Heer and Christina (Horsch) Heer arrived aboard the Constitution on August 25, 1842. They brought with them, Christian's three older sons from his first marrige (wife's name unknown); Peter age 19, Heinrich age 14, and Christian age 11. He also brought his three children from his second marriage to Christina; David age 6, Daniel age 3 and Christiana age 1 1/2 along with them came Elisabeth Horsch age 26 who is listed as a servant. In Christian's will from 1868, he lists a daughter Elisabeth "who now resides in Europe", this maybe the same Elisabeth who emmigrated with them in 1842 but returned later to Germany. Nothing is known about the daughter Elisabeth or who she married while in Germany.

I was told that Henrich or Henry Heer later served in the Mexican War, but I have been unable to find information to document that event. I do know that he left Galena, Il where is father settled with the rest of the family, and went to Cloud County, Kansas to farm. He married Christina Witt in about 1869, Henry was born in abt 1828, and Christina in 1844 both in Germany. They had two sons, Christian born in 1871 and William Henry born in 1874 known as Billy. Billy Heer went on to marry Anna ?, they had no children, however Billy did become a great sharpshooter. He is listed in the Fort Covington Newspaper of 1918 "a one-time professional, returned in 1917 to trapshooting as an amateur."

As for Peter the oldest, he was thought to have served in the civil war under Sherman as an orderly, but that information is kind of unsubstantiated. This info was taken from his half-brother David's biography in 1889. One cousin of mine, Martha "Muff" Zahrndt, was a niece of Peter's and when her father and grandparents were living together, Peter visited one night. Muff said that one night around 1900 Peter came to visit his brother David, stayed for a while and talked then left. They never heard from him again. So not much is known about whether he served in the civil war or whether he lived nearby.

Christian Heer, left Galena, IL he was present there with his family in 1850 (census), but gone by 1860. We know that he left for California, but we don't know how he got there or with whom. He is listed as serving in the civil war out of CA, being mustered in Nov. 10, 1864, mustered out Dec 10, 1864, and discharged on March 1, 1866. These dates don't make a lot of sense to me either. He was in Co. H, 7th CA Inf., Private in the Union troops. After the war ended he was a miner in Mariposa county and Tulomane County, CA. We don't think he ever married. In 1898 he shows up in the newspaper under the recents deaths section. See the newspaper article about his death below.

Daniel Heer, died of most likely TB or cholera. The only info I have for him conflicts with known dates. In his brother David's biography it says he died at age of 12 or so, in about 1860. And this doesn't make sense with his known birth date of 1839. I found the date of 21 July 1854 for his actual death date among my mother's records that were taken from Muff Zahrndt in the 1970s. By the way.........no one knows where he or his parents are buried in Galena.

Christiana Heer, went on to marry Christian Neuschwanger in July of 1857, just three months after her brother David married Martha Evans. I have found information on the family of David Heer's sister, Christiana Heer Neuschwanger who married Christian Neuschwanger in 1857 in Galena, IL. Christiana was widowed in 1880 when her husband died suddenly of what was probably TB. They had five children but only Mary Amanda survived at the time of her father's death. Mary went on to marry William Dower, and they had two daughter's, Mabel O. and Grace. In about 1905, Christiana, Mary and William as well as their daughters left to live in Long Beach, CA. Christiana it seems married again to a William Bower shortly after arriving in CA. Then Christiana died in August of 1906. Her new husband was born in 1857 the year she had been first married to Christian. Mabel, Mary's daughter was born in 1881, and married Claude Hagle in April of 1906 and had two children; Mary June Hagle , born in 1915 (Mary June married Kenneth Cummings, and they had a son, Kenneth Stephan Cummings in 1938) and Marvin was born in 1907 and never married, he died in 1986.

Grace Dower married LeRoy Pawley and they had two children, Helen, born in 1907 and Ralph, born in 1910. Helen married Kerby Hester in 1924 and had two boys; Kerby and Leroy Hester. Kerby married Rosemary and had Alan, Claire and Mark. Ralph married Clare Bargman. No further information is known about Ralph's marriage.

Both Christiana and her second husband, as well as Mary and William Dower are buried in Long Beach Municipal Cemetery, Los Angeles County, CA.

I would like to attempt to post some information on different people that I have received from relatives in order to jog the memory of some of you. This family is descended from one of David and Martha Heer's 17 kids, Estella Heer who married Charles Parkins. Jiskje Randles, a daughter in law of Rosemary Parkins Randles, who is a daughter of John B. Parkins, lives in BC, Canada. She has generously shared with me information which was collection by Rosemary and her parents and grandparents (Estella Heer Parkins, grandmother). The information they collected was taken down by Estella and Rosemary beginning in the 1920s and ended in the 1970s. They include copies of vital documents, family articles, obits, and notes taken down by Rosemary and Estella.

I'm also in touch with an Evans cousin, Walter Evans who is a grandson of James Evans who is a brother to my gg grandmother Martha Evans Heer. James and wife Rose moved to Kansas from Galena, IL and had five children. Walter lives in Metairie, LA.

My Paternal Grandparents

Raymond and Grace were married on January 2, 1928, and my father was born (Medard) Raymond Heer on February 27, 1931, he passed away on May 1, 1993 from complications from Kidney Cancer. My grandfather Raymond, passed away January 22, 1971, and Grace, Dec. 23, 1989.

My grandfather Raymond served in World War I, as a Private 1st Class, Headquarters Co. 37th Inf. at Ft. McIntosh, Texas. He served from May 21, 1918 to Feb. 15, 1919. Recently I found out that he may have attended the following two schools; The Chicago Academy of Art, Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. I have been told that he designed many buildings in Texas such as hospitals and barracks. He was involved in architecture and advertising in Chicago, IL during the 1920s-30s. He had his own firm by the early 1940s, Raymond N. Heer and Assoc. My father also worked with him at advertising as well as type-setting and photography. He collected many Japanese art objects through his lifetime, some were purchased from the Art Institute of Chicago during the 1950s.

My Great Great Grandfather, was David H. Heer and he served in the 7th IL Cav F Co. that was formed in Fayette County, IL. He Martha Evans in 1857, in Galena, IL. He was part of the Old Settler's Association when it was initially founded in 1872. His father, his first son, Rufus and he were all Veterinary Surgeons. David eventually had 16 children between 1858 and 1880. My great grandfather was #2, Richard Walter Heer, b.1859-d.1918, he married Anna Schmeltzer and moved to Winona, MN. They had seven children. My grandfather, Raymond Nicholas Heer was born in 1889 in MN, and married twice. The first was Florence Maycroft in 1921, the second Catherine Grace White in 1927, (my grandmother).
